Coolant Distribution Unit (CDU)

For Data Center Cooling

A coolant distribution unit does what it sounds like, it just pumps liquid at the desired temperature directly to the chip or server. This can be seen as a middleman in the IT cooling infrastructure.

A Coolant Distribution Unit (CDU)/chiller that will be placed between the data center cooling system and the heat rejection unit, with a circulation pump to drive the coolant circulation and heat exchange. The principle is that a reservoir is a container that stores excess process fluid, from which a pump draws fluid, and from which a heat exchanger discharges fluid. A temperature sensor senses the temperature of the process loop and sends a signal to the controller. Controllers are electrical devices that control the function of pumps, temperature sensors, and regulating valves. The CDU is attached and mounted to a semi-custom cabinet.

CDUs are divided into the following categories:

Liquid to Liquid CDU: Best Cooling Performance of All Types
Liquid to Gas CDU: Limited cooling capacity in comparison, but requires no water piping and is easier to install
Closed-loop liquid-cooled CDU

The coolant distribution unit of our LNEYA can be said to be a liquid-to-liquid type, which greatly reduces the ratio of high loss of coolant in the past, and has high safety and reliability.

CDU will become the mainstream thermal solution in the data center. In general, cooling systems with radiators, fans, air conditioning units, etc. are considered insufficient for CPUs over 300W. To continue normal operation of the 300-1000W high-power CPU and improve computing and processing efficiency, it is necessary to properly handle the heat through the CDU.

High cooling performance is not the only advantage of the CDU: Compared with air-cooled units, its major advantage is that it consumes less power and has less loss of liquid cooling media.

The customer is required to provide parameters such as heat dissipation and volume, and the required equipment power can be calculated based on the formula.

CDU working principle

The cooling water enters the unit, exchanges heat with the heat transfer medium, takes away the heat of the heat transfer medium, and reaches the intended temperature. It can be automatically adjusted by frequency conversion according to system pressure, temperature and flow.

The main heat source is cooled by liquid-cooled heat exchange, reducing the use of air-cooled systems. The cooling liquid circulation is provided for the heating element through the liquid cooling equipment, which saves the air heat exchange link and saves a lot of energy consumption of the refrigeration system.

MD’s greatest innovation in thermal testing is the series of thermally controlled chucks, which are mainly used for performance testing, modeling, process development, design defect or IC failure analysis of semiconductor wafers. It can realize rapid temperature change and precisely control the temperature.
